Schools Reinventing Cities Toolkit challenges students around the world to take part in virtual design challenge

Schools Reinventing Cities aims to empower youth to become active participants in climate action in their city. With Minecraft Education, C40 has developed the Schools Reinventing Cities Toolkit to give every school and classroom the opportunity to join the initiative.

Schools Reinventing Cities challenges students around the world to design climate-responsive urban planning solutions in Minecraft Education, envisioning a more sustainable and inclusive future for the places and spaces they call home. It’s a chance to address pressing global climate issues that directly impact their local environments. Just this year, thousands of students from around the globe have submitted their ideas for their cities.

Since January 2023, students across seven global cities have dedicated nearly 100,000 game hours to designing their urban innovations. Students have developed tangible ideas that envision greener streets, smarter transit, and more resilient food systems in New York, Los Angeles, Winnipeg, Calgary, Quezon City, Buenos Aires and London.

Mayors are taking notice of students’ ingenious solutions. Students presented to their Mayor in Quezon City, visited their city halls to meet representatives and share their ideas in London and Buenos Aires, and in New York received the Mayor’s Cup. As competitions begin again in New York and London, mayors are considering ways to transform their visionary ideas into real-life initiatives, such as through informing planning policy. Meanwhile, programs are ramping up in more than five new cities across North America, Latin America and Africa over the next few months!

The newly released Schools Reinventing Cities Toolkit is now available for all to design their own ideas for their cities. The toolkit contains a dedicated Reinventing Cities Minecraft Education world containing seven different city template biomes and resources for teachers and students.
